Universal & Hammer Movie Monsters!

October 26, 2016

Especially for Halloween, here be Movie Monsters...  A recent commission expanded into ten monster portraits inspired by the iconic imagery from the classic Universal Studios & Hammer Horror movies - plus, combined with an influence from the range of 1960's self assembly AURORA plastic model kits and their wonderfully kitsch cover art by James Bama.

The aim was to create highly stylised affectionate character illustrations to celebrate the genre as opposed to realistic portraits of the actors associated with these roles. The full set can be seen on Behance and in my portfolio.

With this set of images I wanted to focus on rendering in Photoshop almost exclusively, while also exploring custom made textured brushes in a little more depth - and only dipping into Adobe Illustrator where necessary.

Co-Starring (apologies - had to!)...

Frankenstein's monster, Bride of Frankenstein, The Devil, The Wolfman, The Mummy, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Zombie,  The Abominable Snowman and The Creature From The Black Lagoon!

Also, many thanks to the Altpick.com for including this work in their Halloween celebration - Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolfman and a Zombie all feature!

The final sketches were left quite loose to allow the rendering process to be quite spontaneous.  Any colour experimentation undertaken as I went along.
